Walker Group colleagues recently took time out of their day to celebrate the house builder reaching its 50th milestone anniversary.

The company was founded in 1969 by Aberdonian, Mike Walker, who having completed his training as a chartered surveyor, spotted what he believed to be a niche that could be developed in the housebuilding market – timber frame housing.

With £1,000 savings and a £4,000 loan he launched Walker Homes which grew to become Walker Group and at one point operated four different companies specialising in housing, construction, self-build kits, and commercial projects.

As well as creating new build housing developments throughout Scotland the company was instrumental in building some landmark Scottish developments including Westerwood in Cumbernauld, combing housing, a hotel and golf course, designed by Seve Ballesteros; Broadwood Stadium, home to Clyde FC, and 200 Broomielaw, a Grade A office development in Glasgow.

Throughout the 50 years Mike remained personally involved with company as Chairman and his son, Bruce Walker, took up the role of Managing Director in the eighties.

Earlier this year the business was sold to Springfield Properties and the Managing Director for Central Scotland, Peter Matthews, took over responsibility of the company.

Peter, who joined staff celebrations, said, “Walker Group has an enviable reputation within Scottish housebuilding and we are all very proud of this great achievement. Over the years the company remained at the forefront of innovation, responding to customers’ demands, and carefully selecting prime locations, along with having terrific teams who remained very loyal to the business.

“Our shared focus on a customer-centric approach and build excellence ensures both companies a perfect fit and we are excited for the future growth of the business.”

Headquartered in Livingston, Walker Group currently has developments in North Berwick, Ormiston, West Calder, Bonnyrigg, Falkirk and Stronvar.
