Our first home

Monarch's Way, West Calder

Fraser and Sheraine 73

Sheraine and I hadn’t been planning on moving but we were keen to get our first place together – especially with a garden – and after a few holidays we’d booked were cancelled, we decided to go for it.

We looked at a mix of new builds and second-hand properties, but we preferred the idea of a new build. We wanted a blank canvas, where everything is ready for you moving in, that you can then do your own thing with as and when you please.

My sister lives in a Walker home at Monarch’s Way and loves her home and the development is always so peaceful with nice views of the Five Sisters. The flat I lived in was built by Walker about 20 years ago too and it was good quality.

We were originally looking for a 3 bedroom home but were keen to get a garden, and as a chef, the kitchen was important to me too. When we saw the location of the 4 bedroom Kidston, the home we went for, with views out to the Five Sisters, a large garden that wasn’t overlooked and the spacious kitchen with a separate utility room, we knew this was the home for us.

The show home was a Kidston too which was really helpful so we could see exactly how the space looks and Sales Executive, Faith was so lovely. The storage is brilliant – there is a big cupboard in the hall and the landing upstairs and built-in wardrobes in three of the rooms which Sheraine has claimed for her clothes already!

We really liked the open plan layout of the kitchen and dining room with double doors out to the garden and an amazing view. It’s a real family area and will be ideal for entertaining friends. Everyone that has seen our home so far has commented on the view and the kitchen. We made a few tweaks to the kitchen, like a glass splashback, Amtico flooring and we also extended the worktop to create a breakfast bar which I’m so glad we did.

The home gets lots of natural light. It has large windows and because of the position of the home, we get sun to the front of the house in the morning and then at the back of the home in the afternoon. The hallway is so large and spacious too – it’s such a welcoming entrance.

Since we moved in, we’ve got a dog called Ozzy, and he is loving the garden. We’re planning on adding a patio with a BBQ and some raised beds so we can plant some fruit and veg.

The homes are all different, so the streetscapes look nice, and you can tell everything is built to a high standard. There is still a lot of construction going on at the development at the minute, but the site workers are all friendly and respectful of residents living there so you don’t really notice.

It’s a great place to live and I couldn’t recommend Walker Group enough.
