Building Brighter Futures
Scottish housebuilder, Walker Group, has pledged its support to a charity appeal launched by Harmeny School in Balerno, near Edinburgh.
The school provides residential care and education to some of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, aged between 5 and 14. However, the Trust which operates the school has launched a £2.4m Learning for Life Appeal to upgrade two of its residential cottages and build a brand new outdoor centre / learning hub as a base for specialist outdoor, art, design and technology opportunities. The aim is to extend Harmeny’s support to young people over the age of 14 and within the wider community.
Walker Group is to support the Appeal over the next three years, pledging £200 for every house sale, and is hoping to raise a minimum of £75,000.
Bruce Walker, Managing Director of Walker Group, has been getting to know Harmeny over the past few months, visiting the school and lending his expertise to the fundraising efforts. He says he has been impressed by Harmeny’s specialist care and support, seeing how “the children are slowly rebuilt, learning how to deal with their emotions and behaviours, and gradually growing in confidence.
“The work the staff does is remarkable. We are really looking forward to supporting the appeal and its vision of helping children to embrace learning and education. Staff are already planning events.”
Neil Squires, Chief Executive, Harmeny Education Trust added, “It’s tremendous that the team at Walker Group want to make a difference to the lives of some of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, and are creatively thinking of ways to raise funds for our appeal. We’re so grateful for their involvement and are excited about our future partnership.”
